So don't use it. Turn it off in preferences (by selecting something
else for each case where it appears.
Preferences --> General
Open new windows with: (which I have changed)
Open new tabs with: (which I haven't yet changed)
WIth both settings set to something else, I doubt there is any extra
work going on, since the history will be kept anyhow.
You can also control how many pages appear (6, 12, or 24), and pin
pages to Top Sites (which some people say doesn't always work). Those
controls are behind the Edit button at the bottom left of the window.
