Books and Projects |
| Although I've published TidBITS since April of 1990 and consider that my primary
profession, I've made much of my livelihood during the last few years writing computer
books. It's ironic, really, since I started out studying hypertextual fiction at Cornell and working in electronic publishing with TidBITS, but the fact of the matter is that books on paper sell, and we all need to earn a living. Even though Internet Starter Kit for Macintosh, 3rd Edition is online in its entirety, I doubt hardly anyone has read the entire thing online, especially in comparison with the number of people who purchased the book. I must admit that there's something viscerally satisfying about a book that you've written. It has heft, and it sits so proudly on your bookshelf, saying "I wrote that!" I just wish I didn't have this little voice somewhere to the left of my spleen nattering on about how these sort of books are a waste of paper and how the information is so much better conveyed online. I have listened to the little voice, and that's in part why I chose to create an online course called Living with the Internet. In any event, I encourage you to read about my various books and projects, listed to the left. I could explain my organizational scheme if you'd like, but I doubt you'd find it at all interesting, so just browse among the titles. For each book or project, I tried to tell some of the story around it, rather than just regurgitating the marketing-speak you'll see linked to most books. The stories are what I believe will interest you, especially for the many older books I have that are no longer available (or interesting, except in a historical sense). For books that are still available, I've included links that enable you to purchase the books through Amazon.com. If you purchase a book using one of these links, we receive a small portion of the proceeds (for only that book). We're doing this with other books we recommend as well - check out the BookBITS page for more information. Browse on, then, and if you wish to comment on anything, send me email at ace@tidbits.com. cheers... -Adam |
