In the fall of 1996, my agent, David Rogelberg of Studio, contacted me about an
interesting project. A small startup called DigitalThink was going to be offering
online courses on a wide variety of topics, and they wanted to differentiate themselves
by working with best-selling authors on the content. The project sounded extremely
interesting, and after some initial trepidation about doing something I'd never done
before, I agreed.
Overall, I think the course turned out extremely well, and I enjoyed the process
of rethinking the ways I explained the Internet to fit into the way online training
worked. It was rather different from writing a book, although it took me roughly
the same amount of time (two months).
DigitalThink is still gaining momentum, in large part because the concept of online
training is still new. However, I have great hopes for them and for my course, and
as registrations go up and we get more feedback, I'll be able to garner a better
sense of how successful the course has been at meeting its goals.
