Books about Graphics

Real World Photoshop 4: Industrial Strength Production Techniques - by David Blatner and Bruce Fraser. Forget your fancy filters and leave Kai's Power Tools in the box. Real World Photoshop 4 is the essential resource for everyone who needs to learn and use Photoshop on a regular basis. It covers the basics, such as Photoshop's commands and features, but also covers such vital topics as color correction, scanning and halftoning, photo retouching, working with multitone images, and an entire chapter on sharpening. There's also a chapter about making graphics for the Web, but that's not the book's main emphasis. I worked as managing editor on the first edition of the book and did some copy editing of the current version. [JLC]

Real World FreeHand 7 - by Olav Martin Kvern. Continuing the Real World tradition of "essential information packed into an entertaining read," Kvern's Real World FreeHand 7 is hands-down the best, most comprehensive book about Macromedia's powerful vector-based drawing program. I consider Kvern the master of teaching techniques and shortcuts; the figures and sample drawings alone are worth the price. And who can resist a computer book that's flat-out humorous in unexpected places? I've done copyediting on the last couple of Real World FreeHand books. [JLC]
