Eudora 4.2 for Windows & Macintosh
Visual QuickStart Guide

Using the highly regarded visual learning style of Peachpit Press's Visual QuickStart Guides, I tell you about Eudora using simple, step-by-step instructions. Tasks are broken down so the instructions and screenshots that lead you through take up no more than a single page each. I cover the latest 4.2 versions of Eudora Pro for both Macintosh and Windows, making clear which features exist only in which versions.

The step-by-step style is good both for beginners and those who just want a quick answer, and more experienced Eudora users will appreciate the reminders of Eudora's many keyboard shortcuts (I can't remember all of them, either) and hidden features (did you know that Eudora has a built-in glossary feature for inserting text into a message?). Ever had trouble finding a message you've received? Confused by Eudora's myriad of settings? Unaware that you can configure Eudora's toolbar? This book answers questions about those topics and more.

Chapter 1: Eudora Basics

This chapter walks you through downloading, installing, and setting up Eudora for basic use. It also provides links to online resources where you can find more information and help using Eudora, and it concludes with an extensive email glossary that defines all those terms you've never quite understood.

Chapter 2: Creating Messages

Chapter 2 starts at the very beginning for many users, answering the question, "How do I create a message?" There are a number of ways, of course, ranging from creating a new message to replying, with other ways such as forwarding a message and redirecting a message in between.

  • Replying to Part of a Message
  • Replying to All Recipients

Chapter 3: Writing Messages

Once you know how to create messages, you'll want to know how to add things to those messages. This chapter covers the seemingly mundane (typing in a message) but tells you little facts you might not have realized. Then it continues on to more complex topics such as formatting text, attaching files, and more.

  • Addressing Messages
  • Choosing a Personality
  • Entering a Subject
  • Text Selection and Navigation
  • Entering Text
  • Editing Text
  • About Message Plug-ins

Chapter 4: Sending and Receiving Messages

Needless to say, there's no point in writing email if you're not going to send it, but Eudora offers enough different ways that you can send and receive messages that the topic warranted its own chapter. Turn here if, for instance, you've ever wanted to make Eudora send a message a later date, or if you want Eudora to check your mail automatically.

  • Sending Queued Messages
  • Sending Messages Immediately
  • Sending Messages at a Later Date or Time
  • Preventing a Message from Being Sent
  • Checking for Incoming Messages

Chapter 5: Working with Messages

You can do many things with the messages you receive in Eudora. You can read them, move them to different mailboxes, delete them, print them, sort them, and more. This chapter covers all of those possibilities, revealing a number of hidden tips, such as how to perform a reverse sort on a mailbox.

  • Selecting Messages
  • Viewing Messages
  • Using the Preview Pane
  • Preview Pane Usage Tips
  • Changing Message Priority
  • Changing Message Labels
  • Changing Message Status
  • Changing Message Personality

Chapter 6: Working with Mailboxes

With the volume of mail many of us receive, we need to take advantage of Eudora's capability to put messages in mailboxes. It's a good way to organize your email. This chapter provides the necessary details and even offers some strategies for dealing with your mailboxes.

  • Opening Mailboxes
  • Sorting Messages in a Mailbox
  • Different Types of Sorts
  • Creating Mailboxes
  • Transferring Messages into Mailboxes
  • Creating Mailboxes during Message Transfers
  • Creating Mailbox Folders Using Menus
  • Creating Folders in the Mailboxes Window

  • Renaming Mailboxes and Mailbox Folders
  • Reorganizing Mailboxes and Folders
  • Deleting Mailboxes and Mailbox Folders
  • Compacting Mailboxes
  • Eudora and Aliases
  • Archiving Strategies
  • Trash Strategies
Chapter 7: Working with Filters

The best way, in my opinion, to put a message in a mailbox is to have Eudora do it for you via a filter. Quite simply, filters rock, and everyone should use them. Chapter 7 looks at how you create and use filters and offers some suggestions on possible uses.

  • Filter Ideas
  • Creating Simple Filters
  • Creating Complex Filters
  • Selecting Messages to Filter
  • Header Lines Menu
  • Contains Menu
  • Filter Actions
  • Activating Filters
  • Finding Filters
  • Modifying Filters
  • Reordering Filters
  • Deleting Filters
  • Using Filter Reports
  • Filtering Spam
Chapter 8: Finding and Searching (New!)

Once you've built up a number of messages, you'll want to be able to find text in those messages. Eudora Pro 4.2 offers completely reworked Find and Search capabilities, and those annoyed with the previous versions of Eudora will love the new features. Although it's far easier to search for messages now than it was before, this chapter provides added detail about features you may not pick up on immediately, such as saved searches.

  • Finding Text in a Message
  • Finding Text in a Message Summary
  • Searching for Messages
  • Turbo Searching for Messages
  • Search Locations
  • Search Term Relationships
  • Revising and Narrowing Searches
  • Searching Tips and Tricks
  • Working with Results
  • Saving Searches
Chapter 9: Working with the Address Book

No one should have to remember email addresses, and Eudora's Address Book ensures that you won't... if you use it effectively. That's what you'll learn in this chapter. This chapter also contains perhaps my favorite tip of the book, but I'll let you find it.

  • Creating Nicknames for Individuals
  • Creating Group Nicknames
  • Nickname Tips
  • Using the Address Book Window
  • Adding Nicknames to Messages
  • Nickname Expansion and Auto-Completion
  • Multiple Address Books
  • Finding Nicknames
  • Modifying Nicknames
  • Managing Your Recipient List
  • Deleting Nicknames
Chapter 10: Working with the Toolbar

Many of us prefer the keyboard for fast navigation, but others prefer using the mouse and menus. Still others like toolbars, and Eudora offers a rather good one. If you haven't customized your toolbar yet, read this chapter for information on how to do so.

  • Turning the Toolbar On and Off
  • Toolbar Settings
  • Default Toolbar Functions
  • Button Ideas
  • Adding a Button to the Toolbar
  • Adding a Button to a Toolbar
  • Moving Toolbar Buttons
  • Deleting Toolbar Buttons
  • Changing Button Functions
Chapter 11: Using Directory Services

If you're trying to find someone's email address on the Internet, you may have been frustrated in the past. Eudora supports three common Internet services for looking up email addresses - LDAP, Ph, and Finger, and this chapter explains how (and when) to use them within Eudora. In addition, the chapter points at a couple of Web sites that can provide alternate directories.

  • Searching a Directory
  • Searching Directories
  • Using Search Results
  • Switching between Servers
  • Setting Default Servers
  • Manipulating Servers
  • Online Web Directories
Chapter 12: Working with Personalities (New!)

Personalities are one of Eudora's most powerful features, since they let you send and receive mail from multiple email accounts. However, because personalities can be linked to both stationery and signatures, you can also use personalities to customize replies to specific people or mailing lists automatically.

  • Personality Ideas
  • Creating Personalities
  • Checking Mail for Personalities
  • Assigning Personalities to Messages
  • Finding and Filtering Personalities
  • Modifying and Deleting Personalities
Chapter 13: Managing Windows (New!)

Although few of us think about managing windows in different program, spending a little time learning about the special features Eudora offers for managing windows can make you significantly more productive, especially on the Windows side, where Eudora's window management features are extensive.

  • Basic Window Controls
  • Resizing Windows Internally
  • Window States
  • Arranging Windows
  • Working with Tabbed Windows
  • Toolbars and Windows
  • Window Management Strategies
Chapter 14: Using IMAP (New!)

IMAP, which is an alternative method some people use to receive Internet email, is significantly different from POP, the most common method of receiving Internet email. Both versions of Eudora now support IMAP, and you may find certain aspects of IMAP use confusing if you're used to using Eudora with POP-based email. This chapter explains how IMAP use in Eudora differs from POP use.

  • Configuring for IMAP Use
  • Creating IMAP Personalities
  • Checking for New Messages via IMAP
  • Choosing Messages to Download
  • Downloading Messages
  • Deleting IMAP Messages
  • Transferring IMAP Messages
  • IMAP Mailbox Differences
  • Opening and Closing IMAP Mailboxes
  • Manipulating IMAP Mailboxes
  • Emptying IMAP Trash
  • Filtering IMAP Messages
  • Finding IMAP Messages
Chapter 15: Working with Settings/Options

This final chapter devotes a page to each of the most common settings panels in Eudora, calling out the important settings and explaining why you might want to use them. Eudora is tremendously flexible, but its flexibility overwhelms many people. Flip through this chapter to make sure you're not missing the one feature that you've been wanting all those years - it's probably here somewhere.

Index and Keyboard Shortcuts Pages

Of course, the final part of the book is the index and a page with the most common keyboard shortcuts on it for both the Macintosh and Windows versions of Eudora. Cut it out (yes, that's right, I'm suggesting you take scissors to my book, hard as that may seem) and tape it up next to your monitor so you can quickly look up the keyboard shortcuts that will make your email faster and more efficient.
