The Fremont Troll
One of my favorite sights in Seattle is the troll that lives a solitary
life under Route 99 in the Fremont District. Gnarled and rough, he glares
out at passersby as if challenging them to venture close, as the VW Beetle
he clutches obviously once did. On most days, you'll find someone there,
taking pictures or just staring at the troll, generally avoiding eye contact
with his single gleaming eyeball. Children, surprisingly enough, seem unconcerned
about the troll, and regularly clamber about on his hands, arms, and even
his nose. Along with the statue of Lenin, the rocket, and the Garden of
Everyday Objects, Fremont's troll defines the area better than any Chamber
of Commerce ever could. These folks are weird.
