Vote on Suggested Titles! (Networking & Programming)

Vote for titles you would buy today if they existed, not topics that just sound good. Feel free to encourage others to cast sincere votes too (our system records only a single vote per person per title). If a particular title earns a strong response, we'll try hard to publish it - we'd be nuts not to.

To vote, select one or more titles below, enter an email address at which we can contact you if and when we publish such a book, and then click Vote.

Also, don't miss voting on all the interesting suggestions about:

  Take Control of SSH (169)
Secure communications between machines on the Internet are essential in today's hacker-infested world, and one of the most useful tools for securing your communications is SSH, the "Secure SHell". This book will explain SSH from the beginning, starting with where it came from, and what it does. The book will then move on to the practical matters of generating SSH key pairs and managing keys, before looking at useful SSH tricks, such as using SSH tunnels to protect other communications and public keys to provide automation and improve security.
Take Control of Basic Networking (33)
Everyone says it's easy to network computers together, but that's often more a theory than a reality, so if you've been confused by exactly which bits of hardware an which cables you need, this book will get you started. It will also explain the basic networking settings necessary to make sure that your computers can communicate with one another.
Take Control of Setting Up a Web Site (27)
This ebook would explain what's involved with setting up your own Web site, whether you choose to host it with an ISP or run the server yourself. It would also explain the basics of setting up a domain name for your site, what's necessary for uploading files, and so on.
Take Control of Online Commerce (30)
Many people who provide freelance services or sell items over the Internet would love to have their own ecommerce site, but are daunted by the cost and technical know-how involved in creating a shopping cart system and accepting payments. This book would give you the basics of setting up an online store - whether you simply need a payment system, say, through PayPal or eBay, or require the services of a full ecommerce provider such as eSellerate, Kagi, or Digital River.
Take Control of Mac OS X Server Administration (109)
Mac OS X Server, which ships by default on all Xserves, includes a powerful collection of server administration tools, including programs like Server Admin, Workgroup Manager, and the Xserve-specific Server Monitor. There are also command line tools like SSH that you can use to adminster a Mac running Mac OS X server, and the goal of this ebook would be to explain what each of these tools does, share the best ways of using them, and offer real-world tips and techniques for keeping your server running smoothly.
Take Control of Web Programming (80)
Ever want to venture out of HTML into other Web languages? This ebook would explore the interworking and application of PHP, JavaScript, CSS, and other such Web languages. Make your Web site easy to maintain, dynamic in presentation, and alive with functionality the simple way.
Take Control of Computers from Afar (147)
Remote control software like Timbuktu Pro, VNC, and Apple Remote Desktop has existed for a long time, but which to choose, and if you're trying to save money by sticking with the free VNC implementations, which work the best on which platforms? Which tool is the best for helping non-technical users fix problems remotely, and what configuration is necessary to help them? This ebook would aim to answer those questions and more, providing real-world tips and tricks for the best ways to control other computers from afar.
Take Control of Connecting Remote Networks (113)
So you have a network at home. And you have a network at work. And you'd like to share resources between them as though they were the same network - that is, you want to be able to access the same file servers, the same printers, and even do some backups from one to the other for off-site security. (Another way to think about this would be enabling a telecommuting employee to have full access to the office network resources.) This ebook would look at the best way to accomplish these tasks, probably via a VPN.
Take Control of Getting Started with Apache, MySQL, and PHP (108)
This ebook would provide basic installation and setup instructions for Apache, MySQL, and PHP in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and Mac OS X Server 1.04 Tiger. Readers would first be walked through setup and basic use of Apple's pre-installed versions, but the book would then provide instructions for installing and configuring Apache 2.0, MySQL 5, and PHP 5.
Take Control of Web Content Management with Drupal (36)
Drupal offers everything an open-source content management framework should: rich text editing, role-based permissions, distributed authentication, taxonomy, and more. But all those features can be intimidating. This ebook would walk you through the concepts behind Drupal so you understand why as well as how, from building a basic Web site to writing a custom module.
Take Control of Using Microsoft Exchange from the Mac (37)
Discover how to enable your Macintosh work with Microsoft Exchange servers, everything from retrieving e-mail to working with and synchronizing calendars. Learn what capabilities are possible based upon the version of Microsoft Exchange your site is running, and also learn what third party applications can do for you in enhancing your experience with Microsoft Exchange.
Take Control of Integrating Macs with Active Directory (63)
Many large, Windows-centric organizations rely on Microsoft's Active Directory technology to provide the infrastructure necessary to manage many users and computers. Although Apple has added support for Active Directory in Mac OS X, making it work in the real world can provide troubling, and this ebook will look at the basic setup and provide solutions to common problems. The challenge will be finding an author who both knows this complex subject and can write.
Take Control of Building Web Sites with Lasso and MySQL (19)
Lasso is a powerful piece of middleware that sits between a Web server like Apache and a database like MySQL; some Web developrs feel that it's easier and more powerful than PHP. This ebook would help readers connect Lasso to MySQL for creating data-driven Web sites.
Take Control of Apple Remote Desktop (84)
Apple Remote Desktop is much more than a remote control package, and savvy admins can leverage its many features for managing numerous client computers in a network. This ebook will show admins how to make the most of Apple Remote Desktop's features and how to work around its limitations.

  Take Control of AppleScript (64)
AppleScript is a key part of the Macintosh experience for many people, and yet it has never really lived up to the ease of use promised for it in the aftermath of HyperCard. For us to write a Take Control ebook about AppleScript, we'd have to figure out how to do so in a way that would be sufficiently concise while remaining useful, since it's a huge topic. In the meantime, we recommend Matt Neuburg's "AppleScript: The Definitive Guide."
  Take Control of Automator (205)
One of the marquee features of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is Automator, which provides a graphical interface for building workflows that can, well, automate tasks. Although Automator looks easy, figuring out exactly how to construct a workflow that does what you want can be tricky, especially if you need actions from independent developers to accomplish your tasks. Ideally, this ebook would include more complete documentation of what the various actions do, along with examples of how to string them together effectively.
Take Control of Apple's Developer Tools (87)
Apple provides a complete set of code development tools with Mac OS X. Many books exist to teach the underlying language, Objective C, and the class libraries (Cocoa) to write great Mac programs. However, these books gloss over the finer elements of the tools themselves: Xcode, Shark, Interface Builder. This ebook would focus on the tools, setting them up, and lots of little-known or hidden features. If you know Objective C and Cocoa, this book would make you more productive with the programming tools.
Take Control of ___ in REALbasic (25)
Since the second edition of "REALbasic: The Definitive Guide", there hasn't been much published about REALbasic. Rather than attempt another huge book about REALbasic, though, we'd see this more as a series that would have individual titles long the lines of "Take Control of Networking with REALbasic" or "Take Control of Interface Elements in REALbasic".
Take Control of Programming FileMaker Pro 8 Advanced (63)
The approach to programming FileMaker changed radically from versions 4/5/6 in FileMaker Pro 7 and now 8. This ebook would not attempt to teach you everything about programming in FileMaker Pro 8, but would concentrate on showing the existing FileMaker programmer how to work with the new methods in FileMaker Pro 8 Advanced.
Take Control of Customizing World of Warcraft (27)
World of Warcraft is the most popular massively multi-player online role-playing game out there. It's also one of the most customizable. But there's a big gap between writing a tiny macro to creating your own LUA commands. This ebook would help you get started customizing World of Warcraft, since almost none of the existing web sites are aimed at the "casual" WoW programmer wannabe.
